Small Business Grant Program Launched by County
Posted 7/20/2020
As part of the CARES Act, Medina County has created a new Small Business Grant Program to help businesses and non-profits hit by COVID-19 and the resulting shut down cover expenses and maintain business growth.

The program, allowed under the CARES Act, is outlined by guidance set forth by the U.S. Treasury Department. It allows local governments receiving CARES money to create grant programs. Other counties throughout Ohio have created similar programs, but they have been more restrictive.

“It was important for us to include all types of businesses including independent contractors, LLCs, corporations, and non-profits. All businesses and non-profits with less than 50 employees in Medina County are eligible,” said John Burke, Medina County Treasurer.

Recognizing small business as the lifeblood of a community, this effort, partnered with others being managed throughout the county, will help support our businesses and ensure they continue long after COVID has been managed. Eligible applicants will be located in Medina County, have fewer than 50 employees, less than 1.5 million in revenue, and not received other federal funds to cover expenses related to COVID-19 and the government-mandated shutdown. To apply, visit https://www.medinacounty.org/small-business-grant-program/

Franchise Fee Update
Posted 2/19/2020

The Guilford Township Trustees were notified by several township residents that
Spectrum has started charging a franchise fee on their monthly bill. Upon investigation,
Spectrum may have charged a franchise fee, or Video Service Authorization (VSA) to residents
in the 44273 zip code in error.
The fee has been collected within the Village of Seville for several years, and it appears that
during an internal Spectrum audit the fee was reassessed by zip code instead of political
subdivision. Residents within Guilford Township and surrounding areas in the 44273 zip who
bundle services through Spectrum may have been charged the fee in error. The Ohio
Department of Commerce is aware of the situation and working with Spectrum to correct the
problem.
According to Linda Pausch of the Department of Commerce, residents who were charged the
fee should call 877.207.2225 and provide them with the following information: Name on the
account, address listed on the account, and amount of franchise fee being charged. Although
there is no timeline given for resolution, Pausch stated the Department of Commerce is
communicating with Spectrum and will continue to follow up until the issue is resolved.
